General Summary:
The Counselor is an advanced professional position responsible for providing clinical mental health counseling services to Glen Oaks students. The role supports a diverse student population through the delivery of group and individual clinical mental health counseling, crisis assessment and intervention, prevention and outreach programming, and coordinated support services that promote students’ personal, academic, and emotional well-being. The Counselor provides oversight of the campus food pantry as a core basic needs program. This includes responsibility for budget oversight, grant funding coordination, data tracking and reporting, and collaboration with internal and external partners.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide clinical mental health counseling, including assessment, short-term treatment planning and documentation for students experiencing psychological distress, trauma, and barriers to academic persistence.
- Provide crisis assessment and intervention, including suicide risk assessment, mandated reporting, and coordination of emergency response in accordance with college protocols and professional ethical standards.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to support student retention and success initiatives.
- Provide guidance and training to faculty, staff, and students on recognizing and responding to students in distress.
- Collaborate with other campus departments, including but not limited to, Housing and Residential Life, to provide students with comprehensive and coordinated care.
- Serve on the Campus Assessment Response and Evaluation (CARE) Team, identifying students of concern, conducting behavioral threat assessments, evaluating potential risks to the individual or community, and coordinating appropriate institutional responses.
- Maintain accurate, confidential records in compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and institutional guidelines.
- Develop and facilitate student success workshops (e.g., time management, study skills, stress reduction).
- Develop and facilitate outreach and prevention programs.
- Provide programming in compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act.
- Provide strategic oversight of the campus food pantry as a core basic-needs support service, including budget monitoring, inventory control, grant application and coordination, data tracking, reporting, and collaboration with internal and external partners.
- Participate in professional development and campus committees as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in counseling or social work from an accredited institution.
- Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) or equivalent clinical license required
- Minimum of five (5) years of clinical counseling or therapy experience.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with counseling in a community college or higher education setting.
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities.
- Familiarity with student information systems (e.g., Banner, Ellucian Colleague) and counseling software.
