Our Commitment to a Safe and Respectful Living Environment

The Glen Oaks Community College Student Housing team is dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive residential environment that fosters student success. Housing policies are designed to reflect the values of the College and ensure the rights of all residents are respected—individually and collectively.

We recognize that our student community is diverse, and we strive to maintain a culture where everyone can thrive academically, socially, and personally.

Expectations for Behavior

Student Housing promotes a living and learning environment where residents and their guests are expected to:

  • Demonstrate respectful and responsible behavior
  • Understand that individual actions have consequences
  • Cooperate with Housing and College staff when addressed about conduct

Housing staff are trained to respond appropriately when issues arise and may learn about violations through various channels such as:

  • Duty rounds by staff
  • Resident or parent reports
  • Desk aide incident logs
  • Social media content
  • Campus camera footage
  • Reports from other GOCC personnel

Educational Approach to Discipline

Glen Oaks uses an educational approach to conduct, emphasizing learning and personal growth. While violations carry consequences, our primary goal is to help students reflect, learn, and make better decisions.

If a situation escalates or a resident is deemed a threat to themselves or others—or if local, state, or federal laws are violated—College staff, including Resident Assistants, will immediately involve a professional staff member.

Residents are expected to remain cooperative, respectful, and calm when approached by staff, regardless of the situation.

Conduct Review & Adjudication Process

The Assistant Dean of Students and the Director of Student Housing oversee student conduct matters related to housing. When a violation is reported:

  1. The student is notified in writing of the alleged infraction.
  2. The student has up to 24 hours to submit a response or explanation.
  3. A decision is made based on the available information.
  4. The outcome is communicated both verbally and in writing.

Sanctions

Sanctions are applied based on the severity of the violation and the resident's conduct history. Multiple violations may lead to more serious consequences, even if individual offenses are minor.

All sanctions are determined at the discretion of the Director of Student Housing, Judicial Board, or Assistant Dean of Students.
